Greenbase was approached by a port operator with a mix of facilities, infrastructure and services, that facilitate commercial ships loading and unloading bulk commodities from several jetties. The company required assistance in the process of disclosing emissions for their NPI reporting. The scope of their reporting included a range of activities, including material storage and handling, the operation of machinery and equipment, ships berthing at the port, etc.
The company maintains a wide range of elements including:
- shipping channels
- navigation aids
- road and rail infrastructure
- storage sheds and amenities to keep the Port operating efficiently throughout the year.
A wide range of areas and elements, means a wide range emissions to be reported
This complexity means that NPI reports required a range of complex calculations to accurately calculate substance emissions for the site.
These calculations require meteorological data, material assay data, movement quantities, pollution control techniques etc, which significantly increases the amount of data required to complete the report.
The Solution: Greenbase utilise their in-house software to streamline, organise and increase efficiency of the reporting process
The Greenbase process began by drafting a custom data collection spreadsheet to establish reporting boundaries and identify all emission sources within the port. This datasheet can be used year on year to collect the data required to calculate the NPI report, dramatically improving the efficiency of data collection.
Once the required data had been collected from the site and validated, data can be entered to Greenbase’s in-house accounting software, IGAN™, for report calculation. Within IGAN™, a custom report is established to reflect the prepared datasheet, emission sources are mapped and calculation methods are configured for the report.
Getting the right C.O.U.N.T
This process is at the heart of Greenbase’s C.O.U.N.T approach to accounting (Count Once, Use Numerous Times) where reports are configured so that a single data unit can be used in any number of calculations as required in the report, minimizing data input requirements and maximizing data efficiency.
No hidden, missed or lost data
The complex port infrastructure and facilities were effectively mapped in the report with emissions calculations configured to each emission source, removing the risk of double-accounting or omitting emission sources from the final report.
Access and leaving a trace
Reports are calculated directly from the IGAN™ software and can be output to the Greenbase website for instant review or generated in PDF for distribution as required. Report results are kept separate to the original data and IGAN™ report, so that traceability is maintained from the first point of data entry all the way through to the final emissions total reported.
On the current requirements
As the regulatory landscape is dynamic, changes to complex emissions methodologies are always occurring. Greenbase has the capacity to implement these changes as they occur, ensuring reports are always calculated with up to date methods.
The company’s involvement with Greenbase dramatically improved the efficiency of the reporting process, minimizing site disruption during data collection and reporting, significantly improving the quality and confidence in the reports generated and reduced the overall cost to the operator to complete their annual NPI report.
